Elgin repeats as winner of Fairbanks Tri-Match

August 30, 2004

By Jim Jicha

Marion Elgin won the Fairbanks Tri-Match for at least the third straight year Saturday, beating the host Panthers 25-12, 25-13 in the first match and taking down South Charleston Southeastern 22-25, 25-10, 15-11. Fairbanks topped Southeastern 25-16, 25-21 in the finale.

Considering that Elgin starts three sophomores and only one senior this does not bode well for future opponents.

Fairbanks jumped to a quick 3-0 lead thanks to a four hit call and two aces by power server Monica Renner. But Elgin got going on a tip by Amanda Worstell and tied it at 3.

The Panthers stayed close for awhile until, with the Comets up 10-8, the roof fell in. Sophomores Kalie Denton, Molly Creamer and Jocelyn Ute teamed up for four points and, with some Panther miscues, pretty soon the score was 19-9. as Elgin coasted home.

In game two the Comets picked up where they left off, jumping out in front 12-4 with Ute contributing seven points on kills and aces. They increased their lead to 18-7 and 21-9, and won the match when Ute's final serve was dug out of bounds.

Middle hitter Jenny Halterman had five kills for Fairbanks in game two.

Elgin had some difficulty with Southeastern, but the Comets contributed to this by committing 15 errors in game one and five in the tiebreaker.

Creamer nailed two kills to put Elgin initially up 2-1, but sophomore middle Kim Workman scored for the Trojans who went up 4-2. Elgin went back on top 7-4, and after several ties, took another lead at 13-10.

But when a Comet was called in the net, Lindsay Harrington served a run of six Trojan points, getting two on aces, to put her team up 17-13. Chelsee McFarland and Workman each scored on blocks.

The Comets closed to 19-18, and again to 22-21 on a block by Jessica Jennette, but were undone by errors, getting caught in the net and spiking one out, to put Southeastern on the cusp. Jennette hit a smash to give them a reprieve, but another hit sailed out to put Southeastern up 1-0.

Elgin began the next game with two more mistakes and when Josie Maggard hit a short high serve that dropped like a rock the Trojans were up 3-0. But Worstell got her team on the board with a cross court kill and then served up an eight point run as Ute and Creamer spearheaded the offense.

The teams traded points until Elgin's Kelsey Pinney stepped up with her team in front 17-10 and served out.

Elgin rolled to a 13-6 lead in the tiebreaker on balanced scoring, including an ace by setter Ashley Schultz and kills from Ute, Jennette and Creamer. But then came a net violation and a Trojan mini-rally ensued with Maggard at the line.

The first came on a long Comet hit after freshman Southeastern setter Bonnie Hupp dug an errant pass out of the net. Workman scored twice on a kill and a block.

But then it was Ute who took charge for Elgin, hitting into a hole, and after one more Southeastern point, coming up with a block in the middle for the win.

Fairbanks came out charging in their match with the Trojans, moving quickly to a 7-1 margin as Meredith Whiteside served five points and Halterman nailed four kills. Southeastern scored twice, on a dump by Hupp and an ace by Workman, but Halterman countered with two more kills.

The Panthers scrapped their way to increasing leads of 14-7 and 19-9. On one volley Whitney Walls scored on a two handed hit from back court after Amanda Mapes raced outside the right pole to save an errant pass. A kill by Alicia McCarty ended game one in favor of the Panthers.

Southeastern took a 4-0 lead in game two thanks to two Panther miscues and kills by Kayleigh Delk and McFarland. Fairbanks took their first lead at 8-7, and after an ace by Workman put her team back on top 9-8, the Panthers went on a 10-2 run, led by to Renner who started it with a kill.

The Panthers scored twice on Trojan miscues, then Delk came up with a nice backhanded hit into a hole to give her team a temporary respite. Renner scored another kill and Walls' serve was dug into the ceiling. Delk smashed a spike to an open Panther backcourt to keep the Trojans close at 13-11. But a hit by Panther Brianne Nicol was dug into the net, moving Renner to the backcourt.

After another hit by Nicol was returned out of bounds, Renner smashed three line drive aces. The first was dug into the pole, the second landed on the right line and the third nicked the net and dropped like a rock. This put Fairbanks up 18-11. Renner serves normally but her missives often act like jump serves.

Southeastern closed to 22-17, with both teams scoring on mistakes. Nicol then scored what proved to be a crucial point with a smash from back court that was lifted by Southeastern. It came on a Trojan serve and turned out to be the Panther's final offensive score.

The Trojans came alive as Workman scored on a tip, and followed with an ace when her serve rolled off the top of the net onto the Panther's floor. A kill by Delk made it 23-20. But the Trojan's were undone by two hitting errors, both of which came on their serves, and since rally scoring is now in effect, they proved to be fatal.
