Elgin wins tri-match they almost missed

August 23, 2003

Marion Elgin won the Fairbanks Tri-Match today, beating South Charleston Southeastern 15-7, 12-15, 15-7 and host Fairbanks 15-11, 6-15, 15-12. Fairbanks also beat Southeastern 15-4, 15-13.

But Elgin nearly missed the event due to a scheduling mix-up.

The three schools have played this tri-match the first Saturday of the season for as long as anybody can remember. Last year the first Saturday fell on the 31st, but this year its on the 23rd. Most tournaments played August 31 in 2002 are being played on the 30th this year, but Fairbanks moved theirs to the 23rd. Elgin had gotten themselves into a scrimmage on the 23rd, and only learned earlier this week of the conflict.

Fairbanks and Elgin met in the third match, after the Comets had just finished an exhausting hour and a half marathon subduing Southeastern. The referee offered to give Elgin a ten minute break before starting the warm up clock, but Elgin's coach declined. The Comets didn't seem to be any worse for wear, as they outlasted their hosts to take the tri-match.

Fairbanks built a 9-6 lead in game one on nice hitting by Katie Gallagher and blocking from Erin Burns. But Elgin came back to tie it thanks, in part, to two Panther errors. With the score knotted at 11 the Comets pulled away, winning on a kill by freshman Jocelyn Ute.

In game two Elgin took a brief 3-2 lead on two aces by Ashley Schultz. But with Gallagher and Burns leading the offense, the Panthers moved out in front 8-3. Amanda Meddles served four points including an ace to put Fairbanks up 13-5. After another Comet point, Mallory Jordan scored a kill and Burns served up an ace, with help from the ceiling after Elgin's dig, to tie the match.

Game three saw some momentum shifts with the teams doubling each others' scores. The Panthers scored first on a kill by Meddles. Elgin broke serve and scored twice to double Fairbanks' score at 2-1. A cross court kill by Koehn returned service to Fairbanks. The Panthers then doubled Elgin's score to go up 4-2.

A Panther error ended that run, and Liz Gracely served up five points starting with an ace. After six service breaks and some nice defensive play by both sides, Elgin scored again to make it 8-4. An Elgin lift ended their rally.

If only Fairbanks could have doubled that. They did score seven in a row, on kills by Meddles, Burns (two), Gallagher and Koehn, plus two Elgin mistakes. But a Panther error stopped the rally and several more miscues helped Elgin to a 14-12 lead. A block by sophomore Jessica Welch gave the Comets the win.
